The intricate detail and beadwork of designer Nomi Ansari was awe-inspiring. We also knew what every woman in the room was thinking: "If only I could parade around DC every day in Kevito’s black tulle maxi skirt!"

It didn't take long for me to say, "This is so much better than last year!" about this year's Fashion Fights Poverty "Raw" theme. "Raw" - a theme about nurturing untapped creative energy, artisanship and asserting creativity over trends - was well-suited for the new Artisphere space.

FFP Celebrates 6th Anniversary in Style

Rather than walking a catwalk, all models posed as if they were in an art gallery. Guests were encouraged to step beyond the rail and interact with the models to garner a close view of the designers’ garments. This was an absolute treat, and a bonus for the designers as onlookers were able to inspect the exceptional tailoring and detail in their designs.

6th Annual FFP: Raw and Defined

In huge hall, actually, I would say, ballroom, models were standing on special pedestals, showcasing each the only piece. No rush behind the curtains, no latecomers (usually one piece of clothing spends about 10 seconds on runway and then disappears, right?) – it was something special, unique and very likable by everybody. Photo ops were through the roof!

When most people think of fashion destinations, D.C. is not usually on their lists. Elaine Mensah, founder of the local fashion consulting and communication firm Svelte, readily admits as much. “A lot of people think that D.C. isn’t very fashionable,” she says. “But that’s so not the case.”
